Super Cat Tales: Magic Bridge! | ← | Yokai Dungeon | → | Mineblast!! |
Yokai Dungeon is a randomly generated puzzle arcade game. It was released on August 8, 2019 on the Apple App Store and Google Play store. The game takes inspiration from Japanese folklore for its setting and characters.
On October 19, 2019, Yokai Dungeon received a Halloween-themed update featuring five new characters and an added bestiary.
Controls[]
- Tap the arrow buttons - Move in the respective direction
- Tap the circle button - Push a movable block
Gameplay[]
Yokai Dungeon contains six different areas. Each area is divided into rooms, the map structure of which is randomly produced each time the game is replayed from the beginning.
The most common type of room contains enemies, where the player must defeat each of the enemies by pushing the available blocks in order to advance to the next room. These rooms can range from square to rectangular in shape.
In addition, each area contains a singular shop room and a boss room. In the shop room, the player can choose from a selection of three random items to equip. The middle slot always holds a rare item which can be unlocked by watching an advertisement. In the boss room, a boss is fought and upon defeating, warps them to the next area.
Characters[]
While the player starts the game controlling Tanuki, an additional nineteen characters can be unlocked using coins. Each character has a different combination of three stats, determined by an illustrative points counter.
- Health - Determines the player's maximum amount of hits they can take before they get a game over. Each heart represents two hits, with the maximum health being 8 HP. The higher the points, the more health the character has. The first three points represent 2 HP each, with the fourth and fifth point representing 1 HP each.
- Speed - Determines how fast the player moves. The higher the points, the faster the character can move.
- Luck - Determines the amount of coins that spawn in the arena when an enemy is defeated. Higher points mean that more coins are spawned.
Players can beat the game with different characters to get distinct endings and earn achievements for beating the game with that particular character.

Bosses[]
Boss rooms are indicated with a demon icon on the map. Once entered, the player will fight the boss and immediately proceed to the next dungeon upon defeating them. The player must push blocks into the boss in order to defeat one. Generally, bosses require three hits to be defeated, although some items from the market can reduce the number of hits to two. Each boss's health is indicated with blue fireballs revolving around their head that disappear when the boss takes damage.
When the player defeats the boss, coins will fill every available space in the room with the occasional Yokaipedia page. If no blocks are present, a block will randomly spawn into the room, allowing the player to collect additional coins without having to move their character all over the room. After a brief amount of time, the player will be transitioned into the next dungeon or shown the particular character's ending if the final boss is defeated.
There are six bosses in Yokai Dungeon, with one boss per dungeon:
Name | Dungeon | Behaviour | ||
---|---|---|---|---|
|
Village | Jumps to the player's position at the time of leaving the floor. | ||
|
Forest | Moves in a straight line horizontally or vertically towards the player, destroying any blocks in its path. It will pause briefly after moving five spaces or upon reaching a wall, whichever occurs sooner, before moving in the same pattern again. | ||
|
Swamp | Rams into the side wall, causing rocks to fall from above. The positions of the landing rocks are indicated to the player with a shadow just before they fall. | ||
|
Cemetery | Shoots a set of fireballs in the player's direction. The last of each set spawns a block in the player's last position at the time of firing. | ||
|
Mountain | Fires two snowflake projectiles, which bounce off the walls and turn into snowball blocks on their fourth time hitting a wall. The projectiles will not turn into snowball blocks if the player or the projectiles are outside of the room at the time of their fourth rebound. Yuki-Onna will then teleport to a different position within the room, thus repeating the pattern. | ||
|
Volcano | Constantly moves in any direction towards the player. As the boss moves, a block will spawn into the room, and the player must position themselves and the boss in line with each other so that they can push the block into the boss. |
Trivia[]
- When the player stands directly behind the market lady and faces forward, she will look visibly uncomfortable after a while.
- Gionathan's achievement description is "Hello there, this is Gionathan from Neutronized!", a reference to a common greeting from Neutronized's devlogs.
